This initiative seeks to bring the metal sector –the most important industry in Bizkaia– to teenagers at the age when they must choose their professional career
On 6th November, Bizkaia’s industrial sector dresses up to celebrate “Industry Day“, which, driven by the work of the FVEM (Federation of Metal Companies of Bizkaia), brings together 900 associated companies, all of them leading players in a sector that is vital to the local social and economic fabric. Velatia will also be taking part, showing what its work is actually like to youngsters who are destined to lead and drive forward the industry of the future.
The day includes a series of different activities, such as the visit by thirty groups of 16- and 17-year-old technology students (around 700 students in total) to 30 industrial plants in the territory. Students will have the opportunity to visit Ormazabal’s main factory in the town of Igorre, part of Velatia group. The aim of these visits is for students to see the numerous opportunities this sector offers in the future first-hand, to promote the incorporation of women into employment in the industry, and, finally, to show just how solid and valuable Bizkaia industry is.
An event at Bilbao Exhibition Centre (BEC) in Barakaldo will round the day off, with all groups of students having the chance to listen directly to workers from Bizkaia industry and see the institutions’ overall vision.
A sector of vital importance
The metal sector –a generator of historical socio-economic value in the territory– brings together more than 2000 companies in Bizkaia, generating over 3 billion euros of added value and allocating more than 1.8 billion in salaries and nearly 500 million in national insurance contributions.
Set up in 1977, the FVEM continues to maintain the traditional Industrial Centre of Bizkaia. With nearly 900 associated companies and employing over 35,000 people, the FVEM is currently the largest sectoral business organisation in the Basque Country.
